Due to eating disorders, women experience hard times in conceiving a child. In reality, many women do not know that poor eating habit causes numerous fertility problems. One reason why an alarming 20% of the patients consult an infertility clinic is because these women suffer from one or more eating disorders. More and more women are developing disorders with their eating due to the vanity of looking physically attractive.
Some eating disorders women have are anorexia nervosa, bulimia and compulsive overeating. These eating disorders cause women to suffer from lack of nutrition, underweight and overweight. Not only do they give poor physical health but poor mental health too. Women who are bulimic, anorexic or overeaters suffer greatly with depression, anxiety and stress.
All the factors make any woman with eating disorder almost impossible to be capable of fertilizing an egg and carrying an infant in full term. Moreover, the mental effects of eating disorders contribute much in developing problems with fertility such as polycystic ovarian syndrome and low libido.
Other infertility problems caused by eating disorders are amenorrhea, miscarriage, irregular menstrual periods, poor uterine quality, reduced egg health and ovarian failure. Underweight women, due to some eating disorders, commonly miss their monthly periods. Missed monthly periods make conception almost impossible. Some women who have been anorexics for many years may have even damaged their body too much and may never have their menstrual period ever again.
Moreover, getting help from health professionals is the only way of succeeding in getting pregnant or keeping a baby’s health. This step can prevent a pregnant mom from suffering from depression during pregnancy and miscarriage and many other associated illnesses. Usually, it is common for many women not to be aware of the disorder they developed with their eating that is why a specialist on the health problems is essential.
It is best for a woman who has been suffering from eating disorders to discuss plans on getting pregnant with a specialist. This is the only way that eating disorders can be managed effectively in preparation to conception and pregnancy. Moreover, it will help the mother and the baby keep away from the risk of gestational diabetes, labor complications, postpartum depressions, low birth weight of the infant, low APGAR scores, placental separation, preeclampsia, Caesarean delivery, infant death, jaundice, low amniotic fluids, blindness, mental retardation and many other birth defects.
Any woman who is serious in giving birth to a healthy baby must take the first step as soon as possible. Studies showed that the effects of the eating disorders can stay in a woman’s body after treatments; there are also threats on relapse. Getting back into a healthy shape is the best preparation any woman must take towards a successful motherhood.
